TOEFL Placement Scores for Placement in ESOL Courses at DSC

No minimum TOEFL score is required for enrollment at DSC.  However, your score will determine your placement in ESOL courses. See below for corresponding placement scores.

Students who score 173 or above on the TOEFL should take the College Placement Test (CPT) to determine placement in courses at Dixie State College of Utah.


Students needing any of the four levels of ESOL at DSC are considered to have Conditional Admission status. These students will need to show proficiency with English by completing Level IV in order to be admitted to DSC as a regular student.


Level I: Introduction to ESOL - TOEFL score below 132

Students who score below 132 on the TOEFL are required to take Level I Introduction to ESOL courses. The students in this level are not permitted to enroll in any other DSC courses.

  •     ESOL 0110 Introduction Skills:  Workplace
  •     ESOL 0120 Introduction Skills:  Academic
  •     ESOL 0130 Introduction Skills:  Life
  •     ESOL 0140 Introduction to Reading
  •     ESOL 0150 Introduction to Writing
  •     ESOL 1060 Introduction to Grammar

Level II: Basic ESOL - TOEFL score between 133 and 146

Students who score between 133 and 146 on the TOEFL are required to take Level II Basic ESOL courses. The instructor may make additional placement suggestions based on in-class assessments and oral interviews. Students in this level could take additional DSC courses based on interest.

  •      ESOL 0210: Basic ESOL Skills: Workplace
  •      ESOL 0220: Basic ESOL Skills: Academic
  •      ESOL 0230: Basic ESOL Skills: Life
  •      ESOL 0300: Basic Reading
  •      ESOL 0350: Basic Writing
  •      ESOL 0360: Basic Grammar

Level III:  Intermediate ESOL - TOEFL score between 147 and 159

Students who score between 147 and 159 on the TOEFL are required to take Level III Intermediate ESOL courses. The instructor may make additional placement suggestions based on in-class assessments and oral interviews. Students in this level could take additional DSC courses based on interest.

  •      ESOL 0410: Interm ESOL Skills: Workplace
  •      ESOL 0420: Interm ESOL Skills: Academic
  •      ESOL 0430: Interm ESOL Skills: Life
  •      ESOL 0500: Interm Reading
  •      ESOL 0550: Interm Writing
  •      ESOL 0560: Interm Grammar

Level IV:  Advanced ESOL - TOEFL score between 160 and 172

Students who score between 160 and 172 on the TOEFL are required to take Level IV Advanced ESOL courses.  The instructor may make additional placement suggestions based on in-class assessments and oral interviews. Students in this level could take additional DSC courses based on interest. After completing this level, students could be considered for unconditional admittance to DSC.
