English Proficiency

Although there is no TOEFL score required for International Students to study at Dixie State College; it is highly recommended in determining whether a student will be admitted as an "Unconditional" or "Conditional" student.

Unconditional Student:

Students who have met the English proficiency requirements will be admitted as a general academic student with all the same academic privileges as a student whose first language is English. "Unconditional" students will still be required to take the College Placement Test (CPT) to determine placement in academic English and Math courses.

English proficiency requirements may be met by providing proof of one of the following:

1. Minimum TOEFL score of 500 (Paper Based Test), 173 (Computer Based Test), or 61 (Internet Based Test) (www.ets.org)
2. IELTS score of 4.5 or higher (recognized as an entrance requirement by U.S. , Canadian, British, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand universities) (www.ielts.org)
3. TOIEC score of 620 or higher. (www.ets.org)
4. EIKEN (STEP) score of 2a or higher. (test offered by Japanese high schools and universities) (www.eiken-ryugaku.com)
5. Complete level 109 or higher at ELS centers in the US or overseas (www.els.com)
6. Complete level 5 or higher at ASPECT schools (www.aspectworld.com)
7. Complete level 5 or higher at LSI schools (www.languagesystems.com)
8. Complete level 107 or higher at EF schools (www.ef.com)
9. Complete level 6 or higher at GEOS schools (www.geos-school.com)
10. Complete level 107 or higher at YBM language Centers (Korea) (www.ybm.co.kr)
11. Complete level 6 or higher at FLS schools (www.fls.net)
12. Is a resident and studied in an English speaking country.
13. Completed a degree in American/British/Canadian High School in a non-English speaking country.
14. Completed "O" or "A" levels in a former British colony (e.g. Singapore)
15. Submitted a letter stating that "English was the primary language of his/her instruction: on the school's letterhead.
16. Studied English language as an exchange student for at least two semesters in one of the US schools and achieved grade "C" or higher.
17. Is transferring directly from an academic program at a U.S. college or university.

Information about English proficiency tests and registration forms may be obtained on the Internet, at American, Australian, or British embassies and consulates, offices of the U.S. Information Service (USIS), U.S. educational commissions and foundations, and U.S. sponsored learning institutions.

Conditional Student:

Students who have not met the English proficiency requirements will be admitted as a "Conditional" student and will be required to take a Dixie State College English Proficiency Exam (EPT) upon arrival. The EPT will determine placement in the Dixie State College ESOL course levels. Depending on the ESOL course level and with approval, students may take additional DSC courses.
