Counselor Checklist for College Planning

We all agree that students should take the initiative in planning for college; however, they most likely will depend on you as one of their best resources during the college preparation and application process. We hope new counselors find this checklist helpful in assisting juniors and seniors plan for college. Experienced counselors may want to refer to the checklist for easily accessible information about Dixie State.

Juniors

Ask students to begin researching universities by visiting the high school career center, requesting information from colleges and universities, visiting websites, and attending college fairs, high school presentations, and on-campus visit day programs.

Dixie State offers a variety of opportunities for students to visit campus. Admissions representatives visit high schools and attend college fairs throughout the intermountain west. To see when a Dixie State representative will visit your area click on our Going Places website.

Encourage students to take the PSAT in the fall and the ACT and/or SAT in the spring of their junior year.

Dixie State accepts either the ACT or the SAT and we use theses tests to assist students in the proper course placement.

Meet with students to review courses and credit, college information, and senior-year classes.

College-bound students should plan to continue through their senior year with strong academic coursework. Our minimum suggested coursework requirements include: 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics, 2 units of natural science, 2 units of social science, 1 unit of either a natural or social science, and 3 additional units of academic electives. Remind students to continue with college preparation and plans during the summer.

Summer is a good time for students to visit colleges and universities if they are unable to visit during the school year. Our campus tours can be scheduled online, and take place regularly during the summer.

Seniors

Seniors interested in attending Dixie should review the "Steps to Come to Dixie."

September

Encourage students to take the ACT or SAT early in the fall if they did not take it in spring of their junior year or if they wish to improve their test score.

Dixie State awards a variety of scholarships based on a student's academic achievements. A higher test score along with other factors may improve a student's eligibility for scholarship awards.

Meet with students to discuss college plans and review application deadlines and requirements.

We encourage students to begin applying as soon as their first quarter grades have been posted to their high school transcripts.

October

Help students locate websites for researching scholarship opportunities.

Dixie State's financial aid website explains how scholarships are awarded at Dixie, along with opportunities for Departmental scholarships.

Encourage students to complete the online federal financial aid form (FAFSA).   Even if the student feels that he/she may not qualify for financial aid, Dixie State uses this information as part of its awarding process.

November

Encourage students to apply online to Dixie State College.

Along with the application, students will need to send us a copy of their high school transcript and their test scores (if they are not already posted to their transcript).  Send them to:  DSC Admissions, 225 S 700 E, St George, UT. 84770.   They can call our admissions office at (435) 652-7706 if questions.

December

Help students with scholarship applications.

Although Dixie awards academic scholarships automatically, students may still want to apply for Departmental Scholarships (music, theater, etc).  Dixie State's convenient on-line scholarship application enables students to apply for several scholarships using one application form.

Remind students to complete and mail their applications for housing.

Dixie State offers excellent on campus housing.  There are  also many off-campus housing opportunities.  The housing website has a complete list of them.

January

If they have not already done so, encourage students to complete the FAFSA.

Approximately 80% of our students receive some form of financial aid, so it is in the student's best interest to apply and see what happens.

If they have not already done so, encourage students to complete their application and send the required high school transcripts.  The earlier a student applies, the better scholarship opportunities will be available.

February

Encourage undecided students to visit their top college choices.

Dixie State offers a comprehensive campus tour, and our academic advisors are always eager to meet with students to discuss their potential career plans and the degree requirements to achieve their goals.  A virtual tour of campus is also available.

March

Remind students to confirm their intent to enroll as soon as possible.

Dixie State encloses a confirmation form with a student's letter of admission.

April

Encourage students to investigate and register for an orientation program.

Dixie State's freshman orientation program (O&R), takes place during the summer and includes advising and registration for fall classes, placement exams, question and answer sessions, and a glimpse of campus life.

May/June

Encourage your students to attend an orientation session.   The transition from high school to college will be much smoother if they get some of the adminis-trivia out of the way in advance and receive one-on-one advisement at these sessions.

Relax and get ready for next year's students.
