ENGLISH 3010

WRITING IN THE PROFESSIONS

Course Description:

This course is primarily for students who have been accepted into one of Dixie State College’s baccalaureate programs:  business or computer science.  The focus of the course is to give you experience in developing the writing and communication skills you will use in your profession.  English 3010 will help you to understand a variety of approaches to professional writing, to analyze approaches to writing found in various texts from professional settings, and to develop skills in writing for professional purposes.  You also will have the opportunity to explore intercultural contexts in writing, business ethics in writing, and the Internet’s impact on writing.

Required Texts:

Successful Writing at Work, seventh edition written by Philip C. Kolin.  Publisher:  Houghton Mifflin

The Business Writer’s Companion, third edition written by Gerald J. Alred, Charles T. Brusaw, and Walter E. Oliu.  Publisher:  Bedford/St. Martin’s

Workload and Your Commitment:

There will be five main writing projects for varying purposes and audiences, with varied formats.  Some projects will involve various stages/steps that need to be submitted with the main project.  We’ll use a process approach so that you have the opportunity to exchange and critique drafts from writing partners, and one project will be written collaboratively with a team.  These techniques will help you to become a better writer.  Also, almost every week there will be a required online discussion that is based on reading and analysis of professional articles or writing samples.

To be successful in this course, you need to be motivated and self-directed so that you complete weekly projects and participate in online discussions.  (If these qualities describe you, you will be successful in this class!  You’ll also enjoy it and learn a lot.)  I also will be available in person (McDonald #233), by phone (435.652.7829), or online (albertin@dixie.edu) to assist you with any course/writing project concern.
