Dixie State College to Hand Out Year-End Dixie Awards Thursday Night
|
Thursday, April 26th, 2012
Dixie State College of Utah will host the 2012 Dixie Awards Ceremony this Thursday night, May 3, at 7 p.m., in the Dolores Dore' Eccles Fine Arts Center Mainstage Theater. The event is free for all DSC students, faculty and staff, and community members to attend. Prior to the ceremony, DSC will host a free reception from 6-7 p.m., in the Eccles Fine Arts Center lobby for all the nominees and their families.
The annual year-end awards program recognizes students, faculty and staff who have excelled in various areas of achievement throughout the academic year. The Dixie Awards, formerly known as the Rebel Awards, have been a tradition at the DSC since the 1960s.
This year's ceremony will feature a style typical of a Hollywood-type awards presentation, featuring five finalists in over 25 award categories, ranging from academic excellence, campus spirit and service to the campus and community. Entertainment for this year's Dixie Awards will be provided by the five finalists for the DSC Entertainer of the Year award.
In addition, the ceremony will once again take place the night before Commencement in an effort to involve family and friends of the award nominees and to establish a new legacy for the annual event. "[2011-12] was a great year at Dixie State, and the Dixie Awards will be a fitting way to recognize those who contributed so much to our institution this year," said Del Beatty, DSC Dean of Students. "It seems that as we continue to grow, the category finalists have become more and more qualified and each and every one of them should be congratulated for their achievements this year."
The ceremony will also feature the formal introductions of the 2012 DSC Baccalaureate Valedictorians and Associate degree high honors graduates. In addition, the DSCSA Officers for the upcoming 2012-13 academic year will be introduced and sworn in. Brody Mikesell, a senior integrated studies major from Henefer, Utah, will take the oath to become the new DSCSA student body president, while Wyatt Hopkins, a junior integrated studies major from Mayfield, Utah, will serve as vice president of academics, and Greg Noel, a junior psychology major from Las Vegas, Nev., will serve as vice president of student clubs.
