The Utah State Board of Regents voted unanimously to appoint Stephen D. Nadauld as the seventeenth president of Dixie State College of Utah (DSC). The appointment comes after the DSC Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution on January 8 requesting the Board of Regents permanently appoint Nadauld, who has been serving as interim president of DSC. Appointed in 2008, Dr. Nadauld's length of service as interim president was not formally specified.
"The leadership Dr. Nadauld has exhibited since his initial interim appointment has truly positioned Dixie for a remarkable trajectory that is already having a direct effect on the economic and community vitality of the region." remarked Jed Pitcher, Board Chair, "We are very fortunate to have him join one of the strongest group of presidents we have ever had."
"I am honored at the opportunity to serve as Dixie's newest President. The institution is at a remarkable point in its history: our newly-established 4-year programs are taking hold, enrollments are dramatically increasing, and we have established some strong relationships with key industries in the region." Nadauld said.
"His previous experience as a president, his long-term vision for Dixie, and his ability to engage stakeholders on campus and throughout the community, has already proven to be a great asset to the school." Commissioner William Sederburg added, "This permanent appointment will help him continue the momentum he has helped create."
In November, Chair Pitcher, Regents Jerry Atkin and Jack Zenger, and Commissioner Sederburg hosted public forums on DSC's campus. The purpose of these forums was to assess the continuity of DSC's presidential leadership as well as to address the need and interest to launch a presidential search.
"One after another, each group we met with expressed accolades for President Nadauld." observed Jerry Atkin, "As a Dixie native, I am fully confident he has the ability to take the college to the next level."
Given the overwhelming constituent support for Dr. Nadauld to continue his presidential leadership at DSC, the public vetting of Dr. Nadauld's possible appointment in local and statewide news media, the unanimous support of the DSC Board of Trustees, and the appreciation for the direction he has launched DSC as interim president, the Board of Regents unanimously voted to forgo its established policy and permanently appoint Nadauld.
"There are a myriad of opportunity costs associated with keeping the institution in limbo for another year during an open search.” regent Jack Zenger, “Thus, given the current economic environment and recent budget cuts, engaging in a presidential search didn't appear to be in the best interest of DSC at this time."
A native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Nadauld earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry, with minors in math, physics and French, from Brigham Young University (BYU), a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Nadauld has held several positions at BYU's Marriott Graduate School of Management, including director of the Master of Business Administration Program from 1980-1983, and as an assistant and associate professor of finance from 1976-1983. Most recently, he served as a professor of finance. Dr. Nadauld was an instructor of finance at both the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Utah.
In 1985 he was named the President of Weber State University (WSU), where he served until 1990. In 1991, Nadauld was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Weber State.
Dr. Nadauld is married to Margaret Dyreng Nadauld. Ms. Nadauld served as the Young Women General President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1997 to 2002. They are the parents of seven sons and the grandparents of 25 grand-children (with #26 on the way).
