MATH 1010 E - Integrated Intermediate Algebra for Elementary Teachers

Description:

Designed as an alternative approach to traditional lecture format needed for education majors who are preparing to enter MATH 1050. Concepts emphasized in this course include the properties of the real number system, sets, functions, graphs, algebraic manipulations, linear and quadratic equations, system of equations, and story problems. Students will be expected to reason mathematically and solve mathematical problems. This course is a lecture/lab course with an emphasis on developmental, concrete applications. In addition to the traditional content, this class integrates grade-specific methods (such as appropriate use of manipulatives to move students from concrete to abstract ideas, math as communication and integrating technology, such as graphing calculators and computer-assisted instruction). The class emphasizes the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and grade-level expectations. Methodologies will integrate NCTM/NCATE standards with classroom activities; homework assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, demonstrations, research and a comprehensive exam. Prerequisite: Math 0990 (with an earned grade of C or better) or ACT of 18 or higher within two years of enrollment. 5 lecture/lab hours per week.

All mathematics classes at Dixie State College will:

  1. Require students to perform mathematical processes including fractions, percentages, decimals, proportions/ratios, algebraic equations and/or calculus techniques.
  2. Provide students with application problems that use a variety of methods including arithmetical, algebraic, and geometric methods.
  3. Challenge students to make inferences from mathematical models that include formulas, graphs, and tables.
  4. Provide students with real-life applications that use a variety of mathematical functions.

Upon successful completion of Math 1010, a student will demonstrate through testing the ability to:

  1. Perform basic mathematical operations on rational numbers with and without a calculator, including fractions, percents, and decimals. Demonstrate concrete, grade specific applications.
  2. Use algebraic processes to solve algebraic equations in one, two, and three unknowns.
  3. Demonstrate the concept of equivalence including the use of variables to define relationships.
  4. Work with functions that serve as models of real world problems including polynomial, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  5. Identify and analyze national and state professional teaching standards related to course content.
  6. Integrate discovery-based methods with traditional content.
