Policy: MATCHING GIFTS

7-23 MATCHING GIFTS

23.1 PURPOSE

To outline the policy and procedures regarding the assignment of matching gifts to various funds.

23.2 DEFINITION

23.2.1 Any gift that is used to match another gift is considered a matching gift. Matching gifts are corporate or foundation contributions that match the contributions of corporate employees to the college. Matching gifts may also be required as a part of various federal or state grants.

23.3 POLICY

23.3.1 College policy regarding fund assignment of matching gifts shall follow the policy of the granting agency. The practices of such agencies are variable. Some agencies stipulate that their matching gifts shall be restricted for the same use as the gift of the employee generating the match. Others give with the provision that the gift be for unrestricted or general fund use.

23.3.2 In such cases where neither the company nor the employee provides any directive regarding the use of the gift, the contribution will be credited for unrestricted use.

23.3.3 Donors whose funds are solicited or identified for use as matching funds for state or federal grants must grant permission, in writing, for such matching purposes.
