Policy: ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER

5-47 ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER

47.1 Definition

47.1.1 Transfer as used in this policy refers to the process of moving from one academic institution or program of higher education to another.

47.1.2 Students may transfer into Dixie State College from other institutions of higher education or they may transfer from Dixie State College to other institutions.

47.2 Within the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) articulation (transfer credit) agreements have been made which assure easy and full transfer of approved credits to other institutions within the System.

47.3 Procedure:

47.3.1 Students transferring into Dixie State College must complete the regular application process and have transcripts from all previously attended higher education institutions officially sent to the Registrar’s Office.

47.3.1.1 Students transferring into four-year programs may be required to meet additional departmental admissions requirements.

47.3.2 Students transferring from Dixie State College must contact the institution to which they plan to transfer and meet their admission requirements, including sending an official transcript from Dixie State College to the transfer institution.

47.3.2.1 Institutional departments may have additional requirements.

47.4 Transfer Credit/Transcript Evaluation at Dixie State College

47.4.1 A transcript evaluation for the purpose of determining transfer credit is done after applicants have been admitted as matriculated students and have confirmed their intent to enroll at Dixie State College.

47.4.2 The evaluation is made using only official transcripts bearing the official school seal. Transcripts may be sent directly to the college from each of the applicant’s previous colleges or hand delivered in a original, sealed envelope.

47.4.3 Transcripts that are faxed, marked "student copy," ‘issued to student," or "unofficial" are not accepted as official transcripts.

47.4.4 Unofficial transcripts may be used for admissions purposes, but will not be evaluated for transfer credit.

47.4.5 Transcripts accepted as official by Dixie State College Registrars Office are automatically sent to the Advisement Center for evaluation and posting of general education courses and elective credits on the student’s Dixie State College transcript.

47.4.6 Dixie State College’s academic departments will evaluate transfer credits to determine courses acceptable toward a student’s major.

47.4.7 The transcript evaluator may require the student to supply catalogs and/or syllabi from previous colleges attended to help in determining the transferability of courses.

47.4.8 Transcripts must come from a regionally accredited college or university for credit to be awarded at Dixie State College.

47.4.8.1 Transcripts from non-regionally accredited institutions must be approved by the appropriate department chair or program director.

47.4.9 Transfer classes will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.

47.4.10 A course must be substantially equivalent to a Dixie State College course with a grade of C- or higher to be credited as the given course.

47.4.11 Transfer courses are posted with the grades earned, but the grades are not calculated in the student’s Dixie State College GPA; however, a transfer GPA and a cumulative GPA on the transcript will reflect the student's transfer grades.

47.4.12 There is no limit to the number of transfer credits which may be accepted.

47.4.13 Transfer courses may be accepted from other institutions for the purpose of posting a repeat on a course already taken at Dixie State College, providing the transfer course is equivalent (as established by articulation agreements). If no such articulation agreement exits, an appeal can be made to the department chair to establish equivalency.

47.4.14 Developmental or remedial courses will not be awarded credit at Dixie State College, but may be used for appropriate course placement.

47.4.15 Students with questions about the transferability of general education courses from other institutions to Dixie State College should consult with the transcript evaluator. Questions concerning major-related courses are answered by the academic departmental advisor.

47.4.16 The transfer credit evaluation is subject to audit and reevaluation.

47.4.17 Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees earned at regionally accredited institutions as well as General Education "Letters of Completion" submitted by Registrars Offices at said institutions will be accepted by Dixie State College in meeting general education requirement.

47.5 USHE Articulation Agreement

47.5.1 An Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree earned at any institution within the Utah System of Higher Education will be considered as meeting the general education requirements of any institution in the System.

47.5.2 Outside of the USHE there are limited articulation transfer credit agreements.

47.5.3 When the general education requirements of a USHE institution have been met, a registrar’s certification that the transferring student has completed baccalaureate-level general education requirements at the sending institution will be accepted by the receiving USHE institution in lieu of the AA/AS degree.

47.5.3.1 In the latter case, the registrar at the sending institution will forward to the receiving institution an up-to-date description of the general education requirements.

47.5.4 Credit other than that intended wholly to meet the general education requirements of the receiving institution will be applied on the basis of appropriateness of credit to a particular institution’s specific degree program requirements as determined by the receiving institution.

47.5.5 General Education course work from a USHE institution shall be applied to assure the best possible fit with Dixie State College’s General Education requirements.

47.6 International Transcripts

47.6.1 International students requesting transfer of credit from foreign institutions of higher education must supply catalogs and/or documentation of course content from those institutions before transfer evaluation can be made.

47.6.2 School records must be presented in the original language accompanied by a certified English translation of all non-English transcripts. Translations must be literal and complete. Faxed documents are not accepted. Evaluations can be obtained through a foreign credential evaluation service. Information about these services is available from the Advisement Center.

47.7 Military Transfer Credit

47.7.1 Military courses may be transferred and are evaluated using the ACE recommendations from the Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experiences in the Armed Services.

47.8 Credit by Examination

47.8.1 Transfer of credit by examination does not automatically transfer but must be posted and reevaluated at Dixie State College (refer to Credit by Examination, Prior Experiential Learning or Petition Policy 5-15).
