5-19 SCHOLASTIC STANDARDS
19.1 All students must assume the responsibility to progress academically and technically while attending Dixie State College.
19.2 Low Scholastic Status
19.2.1 Low scholastic status will result in warnings to students to improve scholastically in order to remain at Dixie State College.
19.2.2 Low scholastic status: A student is determined to be of low scholastic status for one or more of the following reasons:
19.2.2.1 Transfer from another college with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0.
19.2.2.2 Transfer from another college while on academic probation, suspension, or dismissal.
19.2.2.3 Failure to maintain a cumulated GPA of 2.0 or higher each semester
19.2.3 Low scholastic status will be designated on the grade reporting system.
19.2.4 A standard of achievement, as determined by individual instructors, must also be attained by students in the vocational/technical programs at Dixie State College.
19.2.5 Low scholastic status, as identified by the standards set in section 19.2.2 above, suggest that aid in course selection, better study habits, tutoring, personal counseling or other intervention may be necessary for student success.
19.3 Academic Warning
19.3.1 Students transferring with Low Scholastic Status or students failing to achieve a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 for the first time will be placed on Warning.
19.3.2 Students who have been on Low Scholastic Status, have raised their cumulative GPA to at least 2.0, but subsequently have dropped below a 2.0 GPA will again be placed on Warning.
19.3.3 Registration holds will be placed on students on Warning, and those who are academic or program oriented will be required to counsel and register with an advisor.
19.3.3.1 Advisors will recommend programs and strategies to help students succeed at college.
19.3.4 Students on Warning who achieve a current GPA of at least 2.0, but a cumulative GPA below 2.0 the subsequent semester, will remain on Warning.
19.3.5 A student with fewer then 12 accumulated credits will not be placed on more grave status than Warning.
19.4 Conditional Enrollment
19.4.1 Students on Warning who do not achieve a current or cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above the subsequent semester will be placed on Conditional Enrollment.
19.4.2 Registration holds will be placed on students on Conditional Enrollment, and they will be required to meet with the Director of Advisement to establish enrollment conditions in the form of a contract.
19.4.2.1 The personalized enrollment conditions contract will contain required activities, classes, and programs designed to enable students to succeed. Contracts will be signed by students and the Director.
19.4.3 Students with fewer then 24 accumulated credit will not be placed on more grave status than Conditional Enrollment.
19.4.4 Students on Conditional Enrollment who earn a current, but not a cumulative, GPA of over 2.0 will remain on Conditional Enrollment.
19.4.5 Each semester on Conditional Enrollment requires a renewed contract.
19.5 Academic Suspension
19.5.1 Students on Conditional Enrollment who do not earn a current or cumulative GPA of 2.0 the subsequent semester or do not fulfill the conditions of their contract will be suspended.
19.5.2 Registration holds will be placed on students on Suspension; they will not be eligible to attend Dixie State College for at least one regular (fall or spring) semester.
19.5.2.1 Exception: Students on Suspension may take developmental education, pre-college level preparation, success skills, or career classes, registering through the Director of Advisement.
19.5.3 Students on Suspension who sit out one regular semester may apply to the Director of Advisement and the Scholastic Standards Committee for readmittance.
19.5.3.1 Readmittance request forms and procedural information are available in the Advisement Office.
19.5.3.2 Students must initiate the readmission process at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the term they plan to attend.
19.5.3.3 Students readmitted after Suspension will be on Conditional Enrollment and must again contract with the Director of Advisement.
19.6 Appeals of Conditional Enrollment or Academic Suspension
19.6.1 Students wishing to challenge the conditions of their Conditional Enrollment contract or appeal Academic Suspension status may petition the Scholastic Standards Committee, in writing, for special consideration.
19.6.2 Students wishing to petition the Scholastic Standards Committee can obtain procedural information or a petition form from the Advisement Office.
19.6.3 The petitioner is to explain any special circumstances that merit consideration by the committee for enrollment condition or suspension status change.
19.6.4 Students dissatisfied with decisions of the Scholastic Standards Committee may present written appeals to the Vice President of Academics within ten days following notification of the decision of the Committee.
19.6.5 Following a review of the appeal, the Vice President will make a final decision.
19.7 Low Scholastic Status Removal
19.7.1 A student is removed from Low Scholastic Status when s/he attains a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. If a student is removed from Low Scholastic Status and subsequently drops below a GPA of 2.0, s/he will again be placed on "Warning" status.
19.8 Students who repeat classes and earn improved grades must complete repeat cards at the Registrar's Office in order to have initial grades superseded.
19.8.1 Only grades from classes repeated at Dixie State College will supersede previous grades in the same classes taken at Dixie State College.
19.8.2 Historical record of a semester stating a student's Low Scholastic Status such as "Warning" or "Suspension" will not be revised upon repeat of classes and subsequent change of a semester's GPA.
19.9 Specific departments may have more stringent academic standards and requirements for retention in programs than the overall College policy.
