5-6 ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT
6.1 Academic assessment is required of all new matriculating students at Dixie State College. Students may meet this requirement by:
6.1.1 Taking the American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) and having a copy of results sent to Dixie State College Admission Testing Center; or by
6.1.2 Taking the Computer Placement Test (CPT) or COMPASS in the Dixie State College Testing Center before registration.
6.2 Test scores from one of the placement tests, ACT, SAT, CPT, or COMPASS are used to place students in the appropriate course levels for English, writing, reading, and mathematics.
6.2.1 Dixie State College is committed to enabling its students' success, and the staff and faculty believe that appropriate initial placement is a vital part of this commitment.
6.2.2 When a student has multiple test scores, the highest score wil be used for placement.
6.2.2.1 If a student's cohort graduation class has been out of high school for at least seven years, high school GPA is not used as a determining placement factor.
6.2.3 Students with advanced standing in mathematics may consult the mathematics department for appropriate placement.
6.2.4 Placement guidelines are defined in semester class schedules.
6.2.5 Placement scores may indicate that a student should take a pre-college level course or courses.
6.2.5.1 Students who are placed in pre-college level courses should take them at the beginning of their college experience to maximize benefit.
6.2.6 Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP): Students may be placed in higher levels of English and mathematics if they have passed the AP test with a score of 3 or higher or if they have been awarded appropriate CLEP credit. AP and CLEP results must be posted and evaluated at Dixie State College to be taken into account.
6.2.7 Students may challenge their course placement level by retesting in the Testing Center and paying the appropriate testing fee.
6.3 Another focus of academic assessment at the Testing Center is to assist academic and professional planning through interest, ability, and personality testing. A list of tests available in these areas can be obtained from the Testing Center.
