Policy: VETERANS PREFERENCE

3-14 VETERANS PREFERENCE

14.1 To qualify for preference under the Utah Veterans Preference for Career Service Act, an individual must meet at least one of the criteria below:

14.2 To qualify for a 5 percent preference, an individual must be:

14.2.1 An individual separated or retired under honorable conditions having served on active duty in the United States armed forces for more than 180 consecutive days, or

14.2.2 An individual separated or retired under honorable conditions who was a member of a United States reserve component, and who served in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign medal has been authorized, or

14.2.3 An individual incurring an actual United States military service-related injury or disability whether or not that person completed 180 days of active duty, or

14.2.4 An unmarried widow or widower of an individual who meets the definition of 14.2.1, 14.2.2, or 14.2.3.

14.3 To qualify for a 10 percent preference, an individual must be:

14.3.1 A disabled United States veteran separated or retired under honorable conditions, or

14.3.2 A purple heart recipient, or

14.3.3 An unmarried widow or widower of an individual who meets the definition of 14.3.1 or 14.3.2.
