Policy

The Respiratory Therapy Program has established a selection system that is intended to facilitate admitting students who will successfully complete the program curriculum and become competent therapists that meet employer expectations.

Selection criteria for the Program have been formulated with the input and advice of the program Advisory Committee. Criteria include cumulative GPA, prerequisite GPA, previous healthcare experience, program application essay, and interview by the Selection Committee.

Program selection decisions are based on the cumulative scores achieved by applicants and are applied without regard to race, color, ethnic background, national origin, religion, creed, age, citizenship, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or gender.

Procedure

1. Applications are received by the Academic Advisor and logged by the date of submission of Application.
2. Applications are reviewed for completeness by the Academic Advisor, incomplete or late applications are not sent forward for selection at this point.
3. Cumulative and prerequisite GPA scoring are completed by the Academic Advisor and applications are then reviewed by the Program Director and Director of Clinical Education.
4. Academic Advisor contacts each eligible applicant to establish the date and time of the applicant’s Selection Committee interview.
5. The Selection Committee interviews each candidate utilizing the Program Selection Interview and each member independently scores the candidate according to the grading rubric established for each interview question.
6. Interview scores are averaged for each candidate and entered on the Student Selection Data Sheet.
7. Overall scores are tabulated and the field is numerically ranked on a spread sheet.
8. Selection Committee reviews the final rankings and assures that no mathematical errors or omissions have occurred.
9. The top scoring group of students are accepted into the Program based on the class size determined by the Advisory Committee and the College (12-16 students is the usual class size).
10. The next four students are designated as Alternates, to be accepted into the Program in the event that previously accepted students vacate their positions in the Program.

In the event that a fully qualified class cannot be accepted according to the above criteria, late or incomplete applications may then be reviewed for possible inclusion in the class selection.
