Dixie State University — Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs)
Want to get registered for 3 classes before all the other freshmen? Want a group of friends who are all in the same classes? Come join a FIG!
What is a Freshman Interest Group
A Freshman Interest Group (FIG) is a set of three courses that have been grouped together so that you can register for all three at once. They may all be related to a theme or to a specific major, and they all fulfill a requirement or elective credit towards graduation. Being in a FIG allows new freshmen to meet other students with similar interests, share ideas, discover new insights, and develop lasting friendships.
Why should I join a FIG?
Get the jump on registration. You will already have three classes before you come to Freshman Orientation (ROADS), so you just have to add a few more to your schedule when you get there.
Make friends! You will share the same three classes with 20-25 other students who share your interests, making study groups easier to organize.
Get into high demand classes. Many of the FIG courses would be hard to get into otherwise. All fulfill a GE requirement, a program requirement, or give you an elective credit to get you on your way to your degree.
Get better grades! Generally, students in FIGS earn higher GPAs than their peers who are not enrolled in FIGs.
Do FIG courses meet graduation requirements?
All FIG courses will give you credit towards graduation. Many courses fulfill GE requirements, and others fill program requirements for specific degrees.
How do I enroll in a FIG?
Please select the FIG you are interested in from the available list, and contact the registrars office at 435-652-7708 or email records@dixie.edu. Provide them with your Name, Birthdate, Student ID (if you know it), and the FIG title. Note that you must be completely admitted before you can register for classes.
You can also register for the FIG at the “ROADs” Freshmen Orientation with an advisor. Representatives from DSU will be visiting local high schools for this purpose, or watch for a letter informing you of the upcoming Summer ROADs programs. If you have any questions about the FIG program, please do not hesitate to call 435-652-7704 or email the director at Droos@dixie.edu.
Will I be able to take classes other than those in my FIG?
Yes. FIGs will provide between 7 and 10 credits depending on the specific courses that are in them. Students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits to be considered full-time; most first-year students enroll for 12 to 15 credits during their first semester. So you will want to enroll in one or two more classes outside of your FIG schedule.
What do I do next?
You should browse through the descriptions of the FIGs that are offered, and select the FIG that is of most interest to you. Write down the FIG title and either register for it by calling the registration office at 435-652-7708, in-person (Holland building, 1st floor), or when you meet with an advisor at ROADs (Summer Freshmen Orientation).
