  For purposes of institutional effectiveness, campus personnel and activities have been divided into eighteen departments or units. Each department or unit has drafted from three to five statements of intended outcome. Also, each has devised at least two means of assessment for the outcomes chosen. In the table below are listed the names of departments or units and unit representatives, persons designated as coordinators of institutional effectiveness activities.

    • A study group of fifty first-quarter freshmen will write a 500-word essay on a an assigned topic, and another study group of fifty sixth-quarter sophomores will write similar essays. Essays will be evaluated, and results will show that students . . .
    • First quarter freshmen and last quarter sophomores will take an objective exam that assesses their mechanical knowledge about punctuation, usage, and sentence structure. Sophomore scores will be twenty percent higher than freshman scores.

Fine Arts Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Dixie College Fine Arts majors or minors who have passed core courses in their specialty area with a "B" or better will find that these courses are fully accepted as the prerequisites for upper division courses at in-state four-year institutions. For those institutions requiring placement exams for entrance to junior or senior level courses, these students will prove themselves competent to enroll at that level.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • In surveys of 30 Fine Arts majors or minors, 80% of Dixie graduates who fill all core requirements in their chosen Fine Arts discipline with a grade "B" or better and who transfer to instate four-year institutions with the same major or minor will respond that all their Dixie College courses were accepted as prerequisites for junior and senior level courses.
    • From queries of instate four-year institutions requiring placement exams, 80% of Dixie graduates who fill all core requirements in their chosen Fine Arts discipline with a grade "B" or better will prove competent to enroll for junior or senior level course work.

  • The Dixie College art, music, theatre, and communication disciplines will provide quality performance to fill the cultural needs of our various on- and off-campus communities.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Surveys of 100 on and off campus Fine Arts patrons will indicate a 90% satisfaction level with the number and type of performances they have attended.
    • Audience satisfaction surveys addressing perceived quality expectations and fulfillment will be conducted at a random sampling of Dixie College Fine Arts public events. Audience members will express at least an 80% satisfaction level with the quality of these events.

  • The Dixie College Art, Music, Theatre, and Communication disciplines will provide services and assistance to high schools throughout the state that will provide positive introduction to and associations with Fine Arts faculty and programs at Dixie College.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Dixie College Fine Arts disciplines will each target five high schools for recruiting efforts. Recruitment of seniors from these schools to Fine Arts majors will increase by 20% during a five-year period.
    • Questionnaires sent to high school teachers in Fine Arts disciplines in our service area will reflect an 80% approval rate of their respective counterpart programs at Dixie College.

    • Eighty percent of the Fine Arts faculty will have at least one career enhancing professional experience beyond the class room every year.
    • Dixie College Fine Arts full-time faculty will report in writing to the Fine Arts Department Chair at the end of each academic year about their career enhancing professional experiences. At least 80% of faculty members will have spent a minimum of twenty hours time annually directly involved in career enhancing professional experiences.

Science Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Science students, who complete science related pre-major courses at Dixie College, will, after one year following graduation from Dixie, agree with the statement, "my education at Dixie College prepared me adequately to transfer to a college or university."
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • In an attitude survey of 50 students, who have completed science related pre-major courses at Dixie College, eighty percent of respondents will agree that their education at Dixie College has prepared them well to transfer to a college or university.
    • Once each year, the articulation agreement with each in-state university will be examined and there will be communication with the schools to ensure articulation is current. A report will be written that analyzes curricular issues that contribute to effective transfer preparation and issues that still need work.

  • Non-science students will, after one year following graduation from Dixie College, agree with the statement "exposure to science classes at Dixie College has introduced and provided me exploration into interesting ideas and areas of the real scientific world."
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • In an attitude survey of 50 non-science Dixie College transfer students, eighty percent of respondents will agree that their science education at Dixie College stimulated their interest in the real scientific world.
    • A department meeting will be held spring quarter of each year where all non-science emphasis courses will be carefully examined and evaluated in order to ensure that the content of these courses are providing interesting information and ideas relative to the real scientific world.

  • Dixie College full-time faculty, of the Science Department, will be given professionally enhancing opportunities beyond the classroom experience each year.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Eighty percent of the full-time faculty in the Science department will acknowledge having participated in at least one professionally enhancing opportunity during the school year.
    • Each full-time science faculty member will orally report, to the science division, about their career-enhancing professional experiences during a regularly scheduled departmental meeting.

Physical Education Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Each person enrolled at Dixie College will develop an appreciation for the value of physical activity and sports as life-long endeavors. We want our students to realize that sports can be played by almost everyone.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • More than 50 % of students enrolled in physical activity classes will re- enroll in some physical activity class during their next quarter.
    • Fifty former students of activity classes will be surveyed one year after they took the activity class, and 60 % will respond, "I still participate in the activity regularly," or "I participate in some weekly physical activity." Additionally, 60 % will respond that "My physical activity class helped me recognize the need to be physically active."

  • Through the Fitness Center, both community and traditional students will be educated in cardiovascular fitness, and the importance of reducing body fat and resting pulse rate.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • During the first week of the quarter, 100 students enrolled in PE 114, Fitness Center, will be given a body fat and resting pulse rate assessment. Later, during the final days of the quarter, at least fifty of those same students who have successfully completed the requirements for the class will be given the same body fat and resting pulse rate assessment. Results will be compared to show achievement.
    • One hundred students will be given satisfaction surveys to determine their satisfaction with the Fitness Center, including the type of services offered, the hours of service, the cardiovascular instruction offered, etc.

  • Maintain an emphasis on accurate and up-to-date health knowledge to provide the foundation for life-long sound health decision making and emergency health response.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Students formerly enrolled in PE courses will be surveyed one year after the course about the effect of the course on their health decisions, including issues such as tobacco and alcohol, AIDS awareness, fitness, etc.
    • Eighty-five percent of students who take the CPR, Water Safety, First Aid, and Life Guarding courses will successfully achieve American Red Cross certification.

Business Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Dixie College Business transfer students who have passed the Accounting and Computer Information Systems core classes with a "B" or better, will be fully accepted to the Utah four-year institutions with these prerequisites filled. Where competency tests are required, they will have sufficient skills to pass without further class work.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Survey all June graduates in November to determine if 80% entered a business college and were accepted in these areas.
    • Survey all four-year business colleges in Utah to determine if 80% of transfer students were accepted without further requirements.

  • Dixie College graduates with Applied Science degrees or certificates will meet the expectations of their employers in their field of training with adequate skills to move directly into entry-level jobs.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Eighty percent of students in a survey of Travel, Marketing, Fashion/Retail, and Office Administration graduates who have gotten jobs in their field will answer that they strongly agree with the statement, "My degree or certificate has helped me achieve my career or job goals."
    • Eighty percent of the employers surveyed who have hired graduates will report that they agree or strongly agree that the students were, "Well prepared to perform the basic tasks on the job" in these degree tracks.

  • The Business Department will sponsor DEX/DECA and PBL invitational high school contests that will bring the best prospective Southern Utah business students to campus. Local business people will be invited to be judges and be involved with the clubs to better understand the quality of students and instruction at both levels. Scholarships will be given to the winners of these events. This should result in an increase in club membership as well as total business students from the five county area of Southern Utah.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • A response to a follow-up survey of high school DECA or PBL teacher/advisors will show 80% of these agree with the statement, "Dixie College's Invitational Competition has increased my students' interest in business degrees and possible attendance at Dixie College."
    • Eighty percent of a post-competition survey of the students will answer they agree with the statement, "I have a greater desire to come to Dixie College than before I was in this competition."

  • The Dixie Business Alliance will be reorganized to include Economic Development, the Center for Southwest Utah Economic and Demographic Data (SUEDD), and Government Procurement with the current Small Business Development Center and Custom Fit Training functions. This group will market itself to the local business community as well as prospective new employers and businesses. In addition to traditional marketing methods, SUEDD will establish a page on the World Wide Web including five DBA resources and two affiliated programs. This comprehensive approach will result in an increase in the number of clients using the combined services of the group.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • The SBDC reports will show a 30 % increase in clients and/or seminars serviced plus the addition of the Economic Development Director will bring all new clients into the Alliance area to learn of the services available to new businesses.
    • Records will show that the Economic Development Director will refer all new clients to the services of the DBA.
    • The Custom Fit training program will receive a 31% increase in allocated Custom Fit training funds, tied to a service agreement to increase trainees by 31 %.
    • Annually, the SUED WWW site will receive 500 electronic visitors.

Technology Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Dixie College Technology Department students will have state of the art equipment to serve the Business and Trade Industry.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Aero-Flight program will increase enrollment 20 % with help from the Development Office, in order to obtain a Boeing 737 Flight Training Platform. This platform will be available for Dixie College students, Skywest, and other major airlines.

  • Dixie College Technology Department will serve the High School Students and get them to enroll at Dixie College.

    • The Technology Department will begin a Principles of Technology II class in the high tech classroom, thus utilizing the same equipment as present programs. This will allow enrollment of POT-I students from the five area high schools into Dixie College.
    • Placing Recruitment Posters in Utah & Adjacent State High Schools.

  • We will fulfill the Governor's goals of high tech and utilization of available classroom space.

    • The Technology Department will use the same classroom for more than one program at a time. Aero-flight, electronics, principles of technology, and automotive electronics will all utilize the same High Tech Lab in the New Technology Building.

  • Dixie College Technology Department will fulfill requirements of equipment, curriculum, class structure, syllabus and teaching guidelines in order to obtain ASE certification for the Auto Body program.

    • The Technology Autobody Program will become ASE certified in 1996 by doing a self-evaluation.
    • The advisory committee will perform on-site evaluation by December 1996.

  • Dixie College Technology Department will fulfill the requirements necessary to obtain certification from "Print Ed" National Program and thus upgrade the Graphic Art program.

    • We will write a curriculum, update equipment and follow set procedures to comply with "Print Ed" National standards.
    • We will have an advisory committee perform an on-site evaluation to help us achieve our goal of certification by September 1996. The On-Site Evaluation will be completed by October 1996.

Family and Consumer Science and Allied Health Department Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Eighty percent of workshop participants will demonstrate satisfaction and an ability to assimilate and accommodate content of selected workshops.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Eighty percent of surveyed workshop participants will indicate satisfaction with, understanding of workshop content and applicability to personal goals.
    • Surveyed workshop participants will write a short statement on workshop strengths and weaknesses. Comments on strengths will exceed comments on weaknesses.
    • On a survey, 80% of workshops attendees responding will indicate they would take another similar workshop.

  • Students who select a Dixie College Family and Consumer Science Program as their focus and plan to transfer to a Utah college or university will know what courses are currently needed at the school of choice.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • In a survey of those who actually plan to transfer, 80% will demonstrate their knowledge of courses accepted as preparatory in their related program of choice by completing an articulation assignment or portfolio.
    • Upon contacting advisors at Utah colleges and universities, 80% will report that Dixie college students transferring from programs in Family and Consumer Science at Dixie College have an accurate perspective of transferable courses.

  • Dixie College Family and Consumer Science faculty will continue to develop professional skills by participating in educational opportunities which enhance career directions and classroom performance. These may include seminars, workshops, training, (such as Title III), national or regional professional conferences on or off campus.

    • Seventy-five percent of salaried faculty will attend at least one training to expand professional horizons each year.
    • Each faculty member attending a training seminar will make a written and oral report of their professional development experience to the FCS faculty and chair.

Counseling, Advisement, and Grants Unit Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Increase Retention: The major outcome for the Student Service Department is increased retention. Students through appropriate placement testing, career exploration, and orientation to college programs and policies will have the opportunity to acquire necessary information to be successful while attending Dixie College.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • A focus report will be used to determine the number of graduating sophomores and certificates given each year plus the percentage of increase over the previous year.
    • Career Center, Testing, and orientation will keep a yearly record to determine increased usage of each dept.

  • Grow: An increase in enrollment will take place when the students needs are met. Programs such as oncourse, the Academic Student Center, The Drug and Substance abuse center, the Multicultural Center, the Academic Advising Center, and the Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search program have been developed to assist in meeting the needs of each student.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Through the Institutional Studies Department, use the Dixie Data and a focus report to monitor the number of students using the ASC and Drug and Substance Abuse Depts. for increased usage.
    • Each dept. will keep a record of the number of students using their fafacilities.

Security Unit Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Peace, order, and safety on Dixie College campus will be promoted by deterring and preventing criminal activity.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • An annual Crime report will be compiled and published. This report will use a Summary Based Report format which will include Part I crimes such as homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. It will also include Part 2 crimes such as non traffic crimes, misdemeanor alcohol violations, vandalism, disorderly conduct, lewdness, etc.
    • Incident reports to track incidents to which an officer responds will be generated on a case by case basis and reported at the end of the year.
    • Arrest statistics will be compiled and reported annually.
    • The number of calls to coordinate and assist other agencies is reported annually in the Service Statistics report.
    • Community service and seminars will be reported at the end of each year in the Service Statistics report.

  • Property will be protected and secured.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • Theft, burglary and found property will be reported in the year-end Crime and Incident Reports. Accidents will be reported in the annual Parking Enforcement report.   • Dixie College Financial Aid Office will create understanding between the college and its students by enabling students to make informed decisions regarding loan debt and repayment of student loans; and students will be assisted in \resolving loan repayment problems. A final result of these efforts will be decreased loan default rates at Dixie College.

    • Part B Loan default rate as reported by the annual statistics of Department of Education will decrease beginning with the July 1997 report.

Library Unit Institutional Effectiveness Plan:

Statements of Intended Outcome:

  • Students and faculty will report that they have been able to locate and retrieve current and viable information to accomplish their academic goals.
  • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
  • As part of campus survey, students will complete questions that will measure satisfaction with the currency and availability of materials retrieved and service provided to support their effort to retrieve information.
  • For the 1996-97 school year, the library will collect data and create graphs to show library usage and collection development on the following: collection profile (especially number of items added to the collection yearly), expenditures for materials, circulation and use statistics, patron count, interlibrary loan usage, database use count, copies made
  • Students attending Dixie College and auxiliary programs will demonstrate knowledge of library materials and services provided to assist them in their studies.
  • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
  • Students enrolled in various programs of the college (University Center, Nursing, evening students, full-time, part-time, etc.) will fill out a questionnaire which will measure how much the students used the library, how the students were introduced to the library and its services, and identify which tools or services have been used.
  • A focus group composed of two faculty, four students, one representative from nursing, one representative from continuing ed. and two librarians, will meet at an arranged time to discuss experiences in obtaining assistance from library staff to fulfill information needs and positive/negative library experiences.
  • Students and faculty will report that they have received satisfactory instruction for searching and retrieval of information in all formats.
  • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
  • A number of instructors require students to complete follow-up exercises in coordination with Library Instruction sessions, and often the results of these exercises are passed on to the librarians. For this assessment, librarians will request exercise results and feedback from two to four classes per quarter.
  • Two questions will be included in the Focus Group Discussion to address the questions of how and when students received instruction and satisfaction with that instruction, suggestions for change, participation in the Library Workbook course and satisfaction levels with that means of instruction.
  • Students and community patrons will be able to locate sufficient information to research a topic dealing with Dixie College or Southern Utah history.
    • MEANS OF ASSESSMENT:
    • For the period of one quarter all Special Collections patrons will be asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding success in locating research information in the Special Collections and Archives and satisfaction with assistance provided.
    • For the 1996-97 school year, the library will gather statistics to show numbers and topics of materials added to Special Collections and Archives, either purchased or received as gifts.
