WELCOME TO THE NEW SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAM
AT DIXIE STATE COLLEGE!
|

Application Deadline for Fall 2010 -
January 22, 2010
|
The Secondary Teaching Certificate (SET) with subject endorsement is valid in grades (7-12). The subject content area must be in an approved teaching major, minor, or composite major, consistent with subjects taught in Utah secondary schools (Educator Quality Services, 2007). In addition to approved majors, minors, and composite majors, secondary teachers can also obtain additional endorsements in State approved subject areas (USOE endorsements, 2007). These endorsements allow secondary teachers the opportunity to teach additional subjects in the middle and high school setting. Please review the Utah State Office of Education for these approved majors, minors, and endorsements at: http://www.schools.utah.gov/cert/DOCS/majors.htm
The SET Program
The SET program ensures the quality of its program by instructing teacher candidates in the ten INTASC standards, TEAC principles, and the D.E.S.E.R.T. Conceptual Model. These standards are recognized by the State as viable standards of teacher competency and are being used successfully in most programs in the State of Utah. The SET program has integrated these standards into all education courses, content methods courses, assessments, and practicum experiences.
In addition to assessing these standards, academic content knowledge is assessed by the ETS Praxis II subject content test. Teacher candidates are required to receive a passing score on these tests before student teaching begins. Please review the State Office of Utah website for passing scores at:
http://www.schools.utah.gov/cert/OOS/OOS/OOSTesting.htm
Note: The SET Program must be combined with at least a bachelor’s degree in an approved content area. It is not a degree on its own.
Students with Degrees in Progress
Students with B.S/B.A Degrees in Progress:
At least 90% of major course work needs to be completed and signed off by the major academic content department advisor and pre-professional education courses need to be completed before students can enter into the SET program. The current undergraduate degrees available at Dixie State College are:
· BA/BS English Education
· BS Biology Education or Biology/Integrated Science Education
· SUU/DSC Partnership Degree- Family Consumer Science
Students with B.S. / B.A or Higher Degrees Completed:
The degree must be in an approved major area as required by the Utah State Office of Education. Pre-professional education courses need to be completed before students can begin the SET program. Academic content departments may add additional admission requirements. These requirements, if added, will focus on unique aspects of each discipline.
Recommendation for Secondary Licensure
When all classes and requirements are successfully completed (including a successful score on the Praxis II content area exam prior to student teaching), students will be recommended to the Utah State Office of Education to receive a Level I Secondary Teaching License and be able to teach in grades (7th-12th) in their content area.
