ABOUT US
The Disability Resource Center embraces the Dixie State College of Utah's General Mission Statement:
-
DSC strives to help students to define, shape and achieve educational and life goals. It is dedicated to providing personalized and excellent teaching in a learning environment where all students can become passionate about their individual educational endeavors...
...and enhances this mission for students with disabilities.
-
It is our mission to provide education for individuals with disabilities through equal access, empowerment, support, resources, advocacy, collaboration and outreach through the college campus and community.
In addition to providing services and accommodations to students with disabilities as mandated by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the ADA of 1990, we work closely with faculty and staff in an advisory capacity and assist in the development of reasonable accommodations, facilitating students with disabilities to fully participate in all of the programs offered on campus.
The Dixie State College Disability Resource Center will keep students informed and update them on the status of their request for accommodations. Students are encouraged to maintain contact the the Disability Resource Center Coordinator to ensure appropriate accommodations are made available.
During the past two decades, access to higher education, previously only a dream for many otherwise qualified students with disabilities, has become a reality through legislation, student perseverance, colleges recognizing their obligation to help educate those with special needs, and most importantly, through the work of dedicated faculty.
To further express more ‘about us’…with input from other Disability Resource Centers in Utah and across the nation, we designed a handbook and website to fit our student's needs, and to provide information to the Dixie State College of Utah community that will help build pathways to learning for students with disabilities. We are not attempting to ‘reinvent the wheel’, rather to share the vast in-depth information from our sister institutions who are receiving any form of Federal assistance and also offer qualified students with disabilities access to the same programs and services available to non-disabled students. As a result of the enactment of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, universities and colleges are continuing to look to each other to help define the growing need for services. A uniquely experienced cadre of professional disability service providers created what is today the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) in 1977.
-
Students are helped to understand the dimensions of their own learning, with faculty understanding and assistance to include the DRC providing reasonable accommodations to assist in developing coping skills. These skills are critical to the ultimate success of students with disabilities.
-
There are activities sponsored by the Disability Resource Center which include Disability Awareness Week, which may include speakers, movies, receptions and presentations. These activities are attended by and include students, faculty, staff, representatives of state organizations and community leaders. These activities are designed by the students to promote inclusiveness and an opportunity to share our accomplishments and love for Dixie State College.
-
Volunteers are actively involved in assisting and supporting the Disability Resource Center with service delivery to our students. Volunteers are comprised of parents, students, community activists, and representatives from Federal and State programs. These volunteers offer resources and work closely with the Dixie State College Disability Resource Center.
