DOCUTAH presents Tom Judd: “Lost Highway”

DOCUTAH will present a film documentary in the Sears Gallery during their September event about artist Tom Judd and present his artwork in the Sears Gallery opening August 22nd in his exhibit entitled "Lost Highway." This exhibit is an extension of his fascination with using cardboard as a surface to make artwork. This will include his huge map of the world “The World is Flat” as well as a series of portraits of his family's cars growing up in Salt Lake City during the 1960's. The car portraits, although comical at times, will take viewers down the roads and byways of their own memories and America’s love affair with speed, travel, and the automobile. The film documentary, "Welcome, Welcome" produced and directed by John Thornton, is a short overview about Judd’s life and work. Beginning with a show at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1979, his career took off and has produced an impressive 30-year span. His résumé includes extensive exhibits in galleries and museums, inclusion in important collections, and special projects. These include murals, short films, billboard art, chalk drawings, collaborations, and installations.

DOCUTAH invites filmmakers and film fans to come to St. George and Kanab for the films and stay for the scenery.

DOCUTAH aims to present a festival of international scope, with a diverse collection of documentaries with various subject matters and perspectives. Being one of the few college-based festivals, Dixie State College of Utah provides a wide array of master class seminars with internationally renowned guest lecturers who are industry professionals, providing a hands-on approach to filmmaking. Anna Oakden: Photography

Brady Richardson: Ceramics

Dan Whalen: Vintage Car Parts Collection

An addition to the Tom Judd exhibit, Anna’s recent photography and Dan’s brilliant chrome objects of once beloved cars reminds of our crazed infatuation with our vehicles. Cars and trucks now parked permanently in fields and vacant lots speaks to us of the cycle our connection and dependence, decline of interest, and notion of decay. Brady’s ceramics rounds out the show with his current work with clay and glazes.

This year DSC celebrates the 25th Annual Robert N. and Peggy Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show and Sale. This special exhibit opens every year on the Saturday of President’s Day weekend in February. The show boasts a variety of representational art including landscape, portrait, western, and impressionistic pieces. Each year new artists are invited to submit images of their artwork for consideration of an invitation to participate. Upon acceptance to the show, each artist is invited to submit two original, recent pieces of artwork. The show and sale has a huge history of success. Many emerging artists find their way to the top as art collectors and investors discover their talents. Recognized artists continue to participate as patrons vie for their artwork each year. This is the show not to miss.

People wonder why artists are drawn to Southern Utah. Perhaps it is the inspiring geographical subjects, blue sky, or the “Spirit of Dixie”. In fact, the red sand has seeped through the shoes of these fine artists and those grains of sand certainly affect the resulting art and reveal far more than the artist expects. From the underlying formal principles of painting and criteria governing the appearance of work, the painting itself emerges. There is always a story to tell and these artists from St. George, Utah, tell it well.
