What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a combination of work experience and related class instruction which prepares a student for a career in a particular field.

What requirements would I have to meet to get into the Electrician Apprenticeship Program?

1.

Most apprenticeship programs require that applicants are at least 18 years old, although some exceptions can be made for students who are 16 and affiliated with an approved apprenticeship program.

2.

Applicants must furnish proof of high school graduation, proof of a passing score on a high school equivalency test, or currently be enrolled in high school apprenticeship programs (STA).

3.

If the applicant is a high school student, she or he must have an employer sponsorship and must be registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT) federal office.

4.

Applicants must be in good health, free of communicable disease or infection, and physically able to do heavy work under all working conditions.

What can I expect while I'm in the apprenticeship program?

The Dixie State College Electrician Apprenticeship Program can be completed in four years.  During these four years, students will earn 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, receive 576 hours of in-class instruction, and be registered with the State Office of Occupational and Professional Licensing.  All apprenticeship courses are offered in the evening, which makes this program compatible with a full-time work schedule.  While in the program, the apprentice's pay will equal a percentage of the journeyman wage rate.  For beginning apprentices, wages will equal 50% of the journeyman wage.
